THE CONDITIONS OF GEOTHERMAL ENERGY OCCURRENCE AND THE POSSIBILITIES OF ITS UTILIZATION IN WARSZAWA - PRAGA POLUDNIE DISTRICT

The paper presents more important results of seismic and geological research which are the base of elaboration of the conception of geothermal waters utilization in Warszawa - Praga Poludnie district. Because of the lack of deep drillings on Warszawa territory, which may allow the exact determination of deep thermal conditions, data from deep wells situated in the Warszawa close surrounding and from over 150 wells with measured geothermal gradient were utilized. The preliminary assessment of potential geothermal energy resource under Warszawa - Praga Poludnie district was carried out. It proved the existence of geothermal energy resource in Lower Cretaceous, Malmian Dogger and Liassic formations. Totally in Cretaceous and Jurassic formation having the best reservoir properties one may expect the occurrence of about 8.5 km3 of waters and 13,690 thousand t.o.e., what gives on the average about 137 thousand t.o.e./1 km2 (to about 1800 m depth). It gives the potential value of about 1.37 mid USD. Both in Triassic, Permian and Cambrian formations, where geothermal waters are highly mineralized (above 200 g/l), one can expect the occurrence of about 2.25 km3 of waters and about 14 mln t.o.e. Design and performance of two wells to about 2 km depth as well as the construction of the experimental plant would be useful and advisable. In case of receiving the expected results it will be converted into geothermal heating plant with the power from 2 to 10 MW.
